Yan Ann-Li (b. 1994) Raised amid the fields and natural landscapes of her rural upbringing, Yan Ann-Li developed a keen sensitivity and a creative spirit from an early age. With a solid foundation in ink painting, she earned consecutive first-place awards in the National Student Art Competition (Ink Painting – College Division), and her works have been collected since her student years.

After years of study and rigorous copying of masterworks, Yan has become highly adept at portraying the majestic peaks and dense forests characteristic of Northern Song landscapes. Following in the stylistic footsteps of Lan Ying, she brings vibrant and dreamlike color palettes into cold, layered mountain scenes. Through richly layered hues, she creates a fantastical and visually enchanting atmosphere. Yan has also evolved a distinctive style characterized by delicate ink washes and a soft-focus treatment of air and light—a style she refers to as the “misty body.” While preserving the textural richness of rocks, trees, rippling water, and drifting clouds, she deliberately diminishes ink outlines and instead chooses subtle blue-tea and pale green tones, transforming once imposing landscapes into ethereal realms of lightness and imagination.
