1843, due to the “Treaty of Nanking”, Shanghai officially opened the commercial ports. With geographical advantage and interaction with western cultures, Shanghai has bloomed rapidly. 1860, Taiping Rebellion broke out. Gentries moved into Shanghai to avoid the turmoil, which made Shanghai’s culture and economy even more prosperous than ever.
The Society of Pin-hua (1851-1874), founded in Shanghai, is the first art group of the Shanghai School of Arts. Its members included artists from two generations. They all have their specialties, and all be considered the best artist of their time.
