In contemporary life, saturated with both real and virtual imagery and shaped by the boundless reach of the internet, our experiences of viewing and perceiving are often accompanied by a sense of temporal and spatial dislocation—what feels like déjà vu. However, this modern sense of déjà vu goes beyond the causes once described by psychoanalysis, such as the unconscious, dream recollections, or past-life memories. It is now deeply intertwined with the diverse and abundant dissemination of images. Visual imagery and artistic creation thus wander between reality and illusion, creating a subtle intertextuality between real life and virtual landscapes.
For this exhibition, Daguan Gallery adopts “Déjà vu” as its theme, featuring artists who are particularly skilled at drawing inspiration from real life and working with concrete forms. These creators explore the gap between the visible and the invisible, capturing artistic insight from unique perspectives. The invited artists include Liou Shiuan Shi, who evokes the faded glory of bygone eras with antique parts; Takeshi Shikama and Season Lao, who reflect on nature as a maternal force through poetic, ink-like photography; Lo Chan-Peng and Hu Shun Xiang, who depict human perception to highlight cultural estrangement; Chan Sui-Ying, Yen Chun, and Liang Yu-Hsuan, who freeze time and space through renderings of everyday environments; and Cheng Tan-Shan and Cheuk Ka-Wai, who use biological metaphors to project inner landscapes. Though varied in style, all explore the intricate relationships between image, time, and perception through their art.
By capturing fragments of visual experience from real-world settings, these artists create works that exist at the intersection of reality and illusion. Under their hand-rendered and mind-driven expressions of “memory and hallucination,” their creations also serve as profound reflections on the era, nature, human figures, and life itself.
